You Think Your Room is Grotesque?

Two Swiss architects were unsatisfied with their home decor, and thought to themselves: is there a way to snaz thing up? So one turned to the other and said: “You know what works great? Printers! Let’s print a room, that can’t possible go wrong.” And the other said Okay. Hence, the Digital Grotesque concept was born.

At least that’s what we guess happened. Here is how they describe it:

Digital Grotesque is the first human-scale immersive space entirely constructed out of 3D printed sandstone. The design consists of two individual halves (Aediculae) that form a volume – the grotto. While on the outside the grotto presents itself as a flat cubical volume, on the inside a complex geometry, consisting of millions of individual facets that awaits the visitor…Digital Grotesque is between chaos and order, both natural and the artificial, neither foreign nor familiar. Any references to nature or existing styles are not integrated into the design process, but are evoked only as associations in the eye of the beholder.

I don’t rightly know what any of that means as it don’t make a lick of sense, but the end-product seems like a HR Giger creation. Hansmeyer and

Dillenburger, the creators, claim this is meant to inspire, in a non-reductive way, ideas of what can be done to our environment  using a technology that is becoming accessible. What would you do if you total control over your living space, down to the tiniest detail? Would you, as these two, use algorithms to create a million facets? Would you recreate the interior of the Star Trek Enterprise? Would you replicate your current walls only now in sandstone?
